Matching Logic – Extended

چکیده

This paper presents matching logic, a first-order logic (FOL) variant for specifying and reasoning about structure by means of patterns and pattern matching. Its sentences, the patterns, are constructed using variables, symbols, connectives and quantifiers, but no difference is made between function and predicate symbols. In models, a pattern evaluates into a power-set domain (the set of values that match it), in contrast to FOL where functions and predicates map into a regular domain. Matching logic uniformly generalizes several logical frameworks important for program analysis, such as: propositional logic, algebraic specification, FOL with equality, and separation logic. Patterns can specify separation requirements at any level in any program configuration, not only in the heaps or stores, without any special logical constructs for that: the very nature of pattern matching is that if two structures are matched as part of a pattern, then they can only be spatially separated. Like FOL, matching logic can also be translated into pure predicate logic, at the same time admitting its own sound and complete proof system. A practical aspect of matching logic is that FOL reasoning remains sound, so off-the-shelf provers and SMT solvers can be used for matching logic reasoning. Matching logic is particularly well-suited for reasoning about programs in programming languages that have a rewrite-based operational semantics. 1998 ACM Subject Classification D.2.4 Software/Program Verification, D.3.1 Formal Definitions and Theory, F.3 Logics and Meanings of Programs, F.4 Mathematical Logic and Formal Languages

Specifying Theorem Provers in a Higher-Order Logic Programming Language

Since logic programming systems directly implement search and unification and since these operations are essential for the implementation of most theorem provers, logic programming languages should make ideal implementation languages for theorem provers. We shall argue that this is indeed the case if the logic programming language is extended in several ways. We present an extended logic progra...

Matching Logic — Extended Report

Hoare logics rely on the fact that logic formulae can encode, or specify, program states, including environments, stacks, heaps, path conditions, data constraints, and so on. Such formula encodings tend to lose the structure of the original program state and thus to be complex in practice, making it difficult to relate formal systems and program correctness proofs to the original programming la...

Intersection Type Matching and Bounded Combinatory Logic ( Extended

Bounded combinatory logic with intersection types has recently been proposed as a foundation for composition synthesis from software repositories. In such a framework, the algorithmic core in synthesis consists of a type inhabitation algorithm. Since the inhabitation problem is exponential, engineering the theoretical inhabitation algorithm with optimizations is essential. In this paper we deri...

Matching with Respect to General Concept Inclusions in the Description Logic EL

Matching concept descriptions against concept patterns was introduced as a new inference task in Description Logics (DLs) almost 20 years ago, motivated by applications in the Classic system. For the DL EL, it was shown in 2000 that the matching problem is NP-complete. It then took almost 10 years before this NP-completeness result could be extended from matching to unification in EL. The next ...

Management and Query Processing of One-Dimensional Intervals with the UB-Tree

The management and query processing of one dimensional intervals is a special case of extended object handling. One dimensional intervals play an important role in temporal databases and they can also be used for fuzzy matching, fuzzy logic and measuring quality classes, etc. Most existing multidimensional access methods for extended objects do not address this special problem and most of them ...
